Heads Together
Waiting in the darkness of many publishing offices are songwriters wanting their freedom - Songwriters' Workshop has opened the door.
Fourteen such songwriters have come together, not only to play football, but also to create an album which we hope indicate the importance of the songwriter.
Unlike sampler, it does not represent other albums. It is an entity, presenting new songs, new writers, and giving light to songs that would otherwise be lost.
This is just the first round of Heads Together - a hope for the future.

Packaged in a "plain white sleeve" with no identification whatsoever.
Label states: "Many of these versions may bear no resemblance to the original Devo title.
We hold no responsibility for any uptight people.

Be Stiff Tour was: Lene Lovich, Mickey Jupp & The Cable Layers, Wreckless Eric, Rachel Sweet and Jona Lewie.
The Tour went on from 10th of October to 19th of November 1978.
The record was only available by mail order from Stiff Records in early 1979. You needed to send a ticket stub from 1978 train tour to Stiff Records.

The track "Be Stiff", originally written and recorded for Stiff by Devo, was the 'theme tune' of Stiff's second major blockbuster tour of the U.K.
The Stiff" album (ODD 2) features Lene Lovich, Rachel Sweet. Mickey Jupp, Jona Lewie and Wrecklcss Eric, all doing a version of the same number.
Lene's is the one which sticks most slowly to the original and it was used as the encore every night alter the gig.

While the band "The Cable Layers" took off for the US Tour Mickey stayed home.
When the band was gone Mickey was asked to do a tour together with Ian Dury. Mickey had to turn the tour down since the band was in USA.

Mobile
All versions were recorded on the Stiff mobile at a sound check during the tour one very cold October afternoon.
Mickey Jupp's version is simply a twelve-bar. The guitar player, Peter Gosling. said, "We just played a twelve-bar a couple of times,
Mickey wrote down some words and we recorded it the third time round. It was all over in half an hour,"
Wreckless Eric's version was done on the second play-through. He just sang the words, "Be Stiff" over and over again,
then Brady suddenly decided to put in a bit out of Hendrix's "Purple Haze". "I fluffed it the first time but got it right two bars later," he reported.
It's all there on the record.
Rachel's version is plain country and Jona's is just Jonas., The final version on the album is the full blown live version.
It was always moving to see five bands on stage laughing and joking their way through this last number in the set.
The rhythm section is great... three drummers!

Notes:
Liner notes from the back of the cover:
Mickey Jupp has had any number of bands, including Legends Mark One, Two and Three, Kilroy, The Orioles,
and has recorded for Stiff, Bell and Vertigo with different line-ups. However, no recordings from the period
when he fronted his own big band have been released previously, and it's a pleasure to hear once more a
booting sax and a strong vocal back-up that included Bob Fish, later to join The Darts, and Joy Sarney,
who had a top twenty hit in her own right.
The ballad of 'Guitar Pickin' Slim subsequently re-appeared on the Stiff Juppanese album under the title of
Down in New Orleans, but Jupp prefers this title. His other track Down To the Doctors was a top 50 hit for Dr. Feelgood,
who sold well with it and then re-recorded some months later the same tune after Mickey had registered his
disapproval of their rendition.

Product Facts for Onkel Pös Carnegie Hall (In German)

The following info about the gig is given by Holger Bünte-Majoor who attended the gig.
Onkel Pös; the place was sold out, nearly no guest-list, all paid!, and it was a gig still remembered by all who saw it,
possibly Mickeys best gig in Hamburg. And I will never forget: when they played the encores, Mickey was happy!!!
He laughed, played shoulder to shoulder with Ian Duck, and Both! were laughing. Never saw him so relaxed, so that says something about he gig.
For all you Mickey fans, Holger Bünte-Majoor

Linear notes on Cover:
"The Road" by Mickey Jupp the daddy of 'em all, one of the few "who could sing and play guitar so good, he should be makin' motion pictures in Hollywood".
Mick's ambition is "to write the perfect Country Rock song" ...well for money he's written dozens of 'em already.

"The train now departing from Platform Four will call at Basildon, Leigh-on-Sea and Southend only"....

Southend until the railway age, was a watering hole patronised by minor royalty and sophisticates. As the Amusement Arcades and
drinking dens began to multiply, on the seafront and in the town centre, it had become by the nineteen fifties via the Trad Jazz and Skiffle booms
and into the nineteen sixties from Shadows type rock'n' Roll ro R 'n' B and Beatlemania, an important breeding ground for bands.
